bianca and i biked down from coal harbour to english bay yesterday to get ourselves some veggie (me) and non-veggie (b) streetmeat. when we rolled up on the 'dogfather' stand, i noticed two pretty black girls, also getting their fill on street dogs.

the one with short hair approached me and asked me where i got my hair done, and i informed them, to their disapointment, that i did it myself because there weren't really very many black people in vancouver to do it for me (for a decent price). the girl with long hair told me that i was the 12th that she'd seen since they'd been there - that's when i recognized her. welcome to hollywood north, hey?

we chatted about hair and bikes and beach time and i recommended they check third and that they get some good locks for their rides. you know, van city basics - welcome ladies.

i just found this (albeit, dusty) super rad book on the shelf next to my bed. i totally forgot that i had it. it's a really interesting look, via journalism, storytelling and some orginal research, of a cross-section of a broad range of topics that affect urban communities like suburban sprawl, hip hop culture, wiggers, youth activism, and graffiti.

very cool grassrootsy type stuff. check it now at soft skull press (my version was published by subway & elevated press).

my (wholehearted) favourite movie has now been remastered and is accompanied by the new in-depth documentary 'return to westerburg high', and some interesting tidbits (i.e. did you know that both heather graham and jennifer connelly were considered for the role of veronica?). how VERY.

good news is, homie's got some stateside r & r with his mom dukes on the immediate agenda, followed by a return to the old world where he will keep at it with the film-making.

it looks like my excessive consumption of red wine just might be justified. a recent study showed that a compound in red wine, resveratrol, may ward off a variety of medical conditions related to aging, providing heart benefits, stronger bones and preventing eye cataracts.

the mice in the study that were given resveratrol tended to have less age-related or obesity-related cardiovascular functional decline. their total cholesterol was reduced, their aortas functioned better and resveratrol seemed to moderate inflammation in the heart, the researchers said. although most of the mice given resveratrol did not live longer than other mice but were far more healthy in several important measures.

right now, some major shit is playing out in zimbabwe. here's a quick timeline breakdown:

march 30 - opposition movement for democratic change (MDC) claims victory in presidential and parliamentary elections based on early results.

april 2 - parliamentary election results show president robert mugabe's ZANU-PF has lost its majority for the first time since independence in 1980.

may 2 - electoral body says MDC's morgan tsvangirai won most votes in the presidential election, but not enough to avoid a run-off against mugabe. opposition rejects the result.

may 24 - tsvangirai returns to zimbabwe to contest the run-off after several weeks abroad, even though he says first round results were rigged to deny him outright victory.

june 4 - police detain tsvangirai for more than eight hours while he was campaigning for the run-off. he is eventually held five times.

june 22 - tsvangirai says he is pulling out of the run-off because attacks by mugabe's supporters have killed 90 of his followers, making a fair election impossible - not to mention the attempt, a frightening prospect for his supporters.

june 23 - u.n. security council unanimously declares a free and fair presidential election run-off impossible.

june 25 - zimbabwe's neighbors in the southern african development community call for the vote to be postponed.

june 27 - zimbabwe goes ahead with the run-off vote for the one-candidate election. witnesses say some people are forced to vote for mugabe. voters fingers are marked with purple ink to identify them.

june 29 - mugabe is declared the winner with over 85 percent and is sworn in for a new term. observers from the pan-african parliament say the vote was undoubtedly flawed and should be re-run.

July 1 - african union summit calls for a government of national unity in zimbabwe.
